Maria Lassnig, Marlene Dumas and Nicole Eisenman, women painters belonging to different 
generations, share a critical and radical focus on the (self)-representation of the body.

This Dialogue will focus on the historical, structural role that the representation of the female body and the respective concepts of “The Woman” have played in Western Modernism as well as in the Soviet Union and in postmodern and post socialist art. In the centre of Silvia Eiblmayr’s short presentation will be questions about the functional role of the female body in relation to the construction of the gaze from Manet’s Olympia to contemporary art, and, specifically on the ways how women artists have formulated their critique of the structural violence inherent to the systems of visual representation and related body politics.

Lyudmila Bredikhina will talk about the historical specificities in the construction of gender oriented gaze in Russian art and overcoming a powerful myth on the Soviet Woman/Venus Sovetica in the painting of women artists of different generations still working today (Klara Golitsyna, Tatiana Nasarenko). Paintings by Olga Gorokhova and Vika Begalskaja are regarded as a kind of self-representation after emancipatory works by Maria Lassnig and Marlene Dumas

Silvia Eiblmayr (Vienna) - is a doctor of Historical Sciences and curator, lives and works in Vienna. From 1998 to 2008 she ran the 'Galerie im Taxispalais' in Innsbruck. Together with Valie Export she was the commissioner of the Austrian Pavilion at the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009. Eiblmayr is also the author and editor of numerous articles and publications. In 2000 she won the Science Award from the Aby Warburg Fund. At the invitation of the curator of MANIFESTA 10, Kasper König - Eiblmayr wrote a text on the work of Maria Lassnig, Nicole Eisenman and Marlene Dumas. 

Lyudmila Bredikhina (Moscow) - is a scholar, critic, curator and expert in the field of fine arts and gender studies. From 1990 to 1994 she was the coordinator of the gallery "Regina", leading the gallery's publications and authoring and compiling catalogues. In 2006, together with Katy Deepwell she released an anthology of 'The Gender, Theory and Art Anthology: 1970-2000.'

The dialogue will be held in Russian and English, with simultaneous translation.
