A Christmas tree on the Palace Square

Within the framework of the MANIFESTA 10 Public Program, this weekend Estonian artist Kristina Norman positioned a sculpture of a Christmas tree outside the Winter Palace. The idea came from the unfinished Christmas tree from Maidan Nezalezhnosti in Kiev. The placing of a tree in the middle of summer might seem unusual, just as unusual as the current alarming political situation of the escalating conflict, growing distrust and aggression. The tree, which is usually associated with family gatherings and love, calls up for ceasefire and peace rather than a nonsensical construction of one-sided truths.

The sculpture can be seen on Palace Square, St. Petersburg from 20 July – 3 August, 2014
